Dictatorship Countries 2020 including peace price winner

Dictatorship Countries 2020

What is a Dictatorship?

A dictatorship is a type of government in which a single person or party has absolute power. This means that the ruler or party has complete control and the rights of the people are suppressed. The leaders of dictatorships are known as dictators, and they are usually backed by powerful groups of people. Typically, dictators are put into power when a nation faces significant social issues, such as high rates of unemployment or unrest among the nation’s people.
The financial backing of powerful groups isn’t all that’s needed. In order for a dictatorship to form, all opponents of the dictator ultimately need to be removed. This can be through any means necessary, including being imprisoned or even killed. There are many negative effects of a dictatorship. That includes the unraveling of social organizations and democratic institutions, the prohibition of other political parties, and the replacement of the nation’s constitution. Under a dictatorship, many people are persecuted for reasons including their religion or their economic status. Some dictatorships may have secret police, indefinite arrests, and concentration camps.

The Five Kinds of Dictatorships

The specific details of a dictatorship comes down to the individual rulers. Some leaders of dictatorships are far more strict and overbearing than other dictators, and the type of dictatorship a country is ruled by comes down to the personality and behavior of the dictator.
There are five kinds of dictatorships in total, including…
  • Hybrid dictatorships
  • Military dictatorships
  • Monarchies
  • Personalist dictatorships
  • Single party dictatorships

What Life is Like in a Country Ruled by a Dictatorship

Dictatorships are run by one person who holds all of the country’s power. Known as dictators, the leaders of dictatorships often have a team of officials who make up the government of the dictatorship, but these officials do not have much of a say in the final outcome of anything.
On a similar note, the citizens of the country with a dictatorship do not have much of a voice, either. The entire premise of a dictatorship is that there is one person calling all of the shots for an entire country, reflecting an obvious imbalance of power.
From the outside looking in, life within a dictatorship is akin to being in a toxic relationship or living situation. However, this is not how everyone views the innerworkings of a dictatorship. For some people, like the citizens of North Korea, this system of government is all the citizens know.
They have never experienced anything else, so living under a dictatorship is not jarring or shocking to them. Dictatorships only seem extreme and unethical to people who have lived differently because it takes an outside perspective.

The Countries with Dictatorships in the Modern World

As of 2018, there are currently a total of fifty nations that have a dictator or authoritarian regime ruling the nation to this day. Europe is home to one dictatorship, while three of them can be found in Latin America and South America. There are eight dictatorships in Asia, seven in the Eurasian region of the world, and twelve spanning from the northern parts of Africa to the Middle East.

African Dictators

Africa has several long-standing dictators; however, they are beginning to lose power across the continent. In the last four years alone, 26 African countries have had transfers of power. Most recently in April, Algeria’s Abdelaziz Bouteflika and Sudan’s Omar Hassan al-Bashir were forced to step down. Unfortunately, democracy is still shaky in these countries, and the possibility of another dictator rising to power is likely.
There are currently 17 dictators in Africa, some worse than others. Some have been in power for decades, such as President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial New Guinea. President Obiang has been in power for 40 years after ousting his uncle, Francisco Macías Nguema, and sentencing him to death by firing squad. His wealth is estimated to be approximately $600 million thanks to an oil boom that enriched his family at the expense of the Equatorial Guinea citizens. Obiang’s regime is known for unlawful killings, torture of prisoners, government-sanctioned kidnappings, and even accusations of cannibalism.

Dictators Around the World

The leaders of dictatorships are not outwardly identified as dictators when they are being addressed by other people. Interestingly enough, you might not recognize a dictator based on their title because many of them are called presidents, kings, prime ministers, and many other titles. Here are the names and titles of the fifty dictators around the world.
  • President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai of Afghanistan
  • President Abdelkader Bensalah of Algeria
  • President Joao Lourenco of Angola
  • President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan
  • King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain
  • President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus
  • Sultan Haji Waddaulah of Brunei

  • Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia
  • President Albert-Bernard Bongo of Gabon
  • President Hassan Rouhani of Iran

  • President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan
  • President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela
  • President Nguyen Phu Trong of Vietnam
  • President Brahim Ghali of Western Sahara
  • President Abd Al-Hadi of Yemen
Is China a dictatorship? Yes, China is a dictatorship in the form of what the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China calls a “people’s democratic dictatorship.” The premise of the “people’s democratic dictatorship” is that the Chinese Party of China and the state represent and act on behalf of the people, but possess and may use powers against reactionary forces. The People’s Republic of China is currently ruled by President Xi Jinping, who also serves as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, Chairman of the Central Military Commission, the country’s Vice President, the President of the Central Party School, and the 1st ranked member of the CPC Politburo Standing Committee.
Is Russia a dictatorship? Russia is a federal semi-presidential republic and an oligarchy. President Vladimir Putin is currently serving his fourth term as president of Russia. Whether or not Putin is a dictator has mixed answers. Those who believe that he is a dictator argue that he removed freedom of speech; the press can only publish what he allows them to; imprisons his opponents, and he has structured the government so that it keeps him at the top and gives him the most power. In addition to executive power, Putin also holds judicial and legislative power, allowing him to change laws to fit his agenda.

Autocracy Countries

Often confused with a dictatorship, autocracy is a system of governance headed by a single ruler called an autocrat. Decisions made by the autocrat are not subject to legal restraints and the autocrat exercised unlimited and undisputed power. The term was a favorable feature for rulers, having no conflicts of interest in the government to their own rule. While autocratic countries are not always malevolent, they are continuing to face rising resistance. Modern autocratic countries include Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela, Egypt, Oman, Brunei, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Eswatini.

Oromia's returnee OLF rebels on hunger strike
Former Oromian rebels currently being rehabilitated at a camp have started a hunger strike protesting poor living conditions.

“We are treated inhumanly and no one cares about us, most of our comrades are now ill due to lack of hygiene and absence of food,” one of the ex-rebels told the BBC Afaan Oromoo Service.

An estimated 1,000 fighters under the banner of the Oromo Liberation Front, OLF, are currently kept at the Tolay camp located in south-western Ethiopia.

It is not known how long the hunger strike is supposed to last or the conditions under which they will call it off.

In the last few months, government forces and OLF fighters in a part of Oromia clashed with reports that the army had carried out air raids on their camps.

The Oromia regional government has had cause to talk in harsh terms about OLF’s operations after it was revealed that some of its fighters were involved in rising insecurity in the region – Ethiopia’s largest and most populous.

OLF is one of the main ex-terrorist groups that returned to the country last year from Eritrea. Their return was based on a peace deal reached between Ethiopia and Eritrea in July.

The Abiy Ahmed federal government agreed a deal with the group. The Oromia region has subsequently entered a political alliance with OLF but the security concerns have continued to linger.

Members of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) lured into submission by JSM & Co. have become hostages in their own land and are being treated as Guinea pigs by ODP's bestial cadres. A moral decadence of the lowest order is at works under the suzerainty of Lamma's and Abiy's Ethiopia. It is very saddening to watch this happening on the watches of those "ljoollee Oromo at the helm of the State power in Ethiopia" -unless the reality of it is nothing more than 'much ado about nothing.' Why on earth is the ruling party condoning acts of barbarism on its own people when their cadres are feasting on the blood and flesh of their own brothers? Why is it so political for them to apprehend helpless people who are at the mercy of their good will and do not pose a single threat to the ODP unless the said bunch is truly made up of a house of cards? Why is it so difficult to release these people to their own natural environment, i.e., their villages where they can find support among family members, relatives and neighbours? Who are they trying to avenge by torturing helpless people for the political or economic end? I know I can ask JSM these questions as he is in town now but I already know what he is going to lecture me as usual. He is as helpless as the very people he had delivered to the concentration camp with the very exception of a privilege he has at his disposal: the 1st class flight he could take to any airport in the world at any time of the day or the night. Yet, I will talk to him, at least for the record that he escaped the threats against him by Alamu Sime, while the helpless had to absorb all of the agonies meant for him and others. Oromos have to remember though, the destiny of members of OLA who would be repatriated is bestowed upon the Abba Gadaas, Oromo Elders, Oromo intellectuals and the Oromo masses at large, And therefore, we all have the moral and historic obligation to inquire the conditions of the returnees. Otherwise, all would be added into the basket of the accomplice and are considered collaborators in acts of bestiality.

The Ethiopian army on Sunday morning (January 13) started an aerial operation targeting areas in western Oromia believed to be he held by ex-rebel group, Oromo Liberation Front, OLF.
The Addis Standard portal cited an unnamed military source as confirming the air strikes in Qellem Wellega and surrounding areas.
The portal quoted the source as saying the strikes were targeted at “military camps run by the OLA,” in reference to the Oromo Liberation Army, the armed wing of the OLF. It is not known when the strikes are supposed to end.
The action is tied to two bank robbery incidents that were reportedly carried out by armed members of the OLF. The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia and the Cooperative Bank of Oromia were robbed on Saturday. Local media outlets are reporting that hostages were taken in the robbery.
The regional administration also told the VOA Amharic service that bank robbery cases in western Oromia had shot up at the last count that 10 incidents had been reported.
The OLF is one of about a half-dozen rebel groups that were based in next-door Eritrea. Its leadership agreed to return home to pursue peaceful political struggle after the Ethiopia – Eritrea peace deal of July 2018.
OLF fighters crossed the border back home after years in Eritrea before its leadership led by Dawud Ibsa flew into the capital Addis Ababa to much fanfare and jubilation.
The group has since their return gotten into disagreement with the federal government especially on the deployment of troops in areas it says its fighters are ‘active.’
Many political and security watchers have warned that basic disagreement between OLFand the regional and federal government led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed could prove fatal for ongoing reforms.

Ethiopian rebels fire verbal volley over peace deal

Ethiopia's Oromo people celebrated the return of the formerly banned anti-government group the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) in Addis Ababa in September
A rebel group popular with Ethiopia's largest ethnic community on Friday accused the government of breaching a historic peace deal aimed at encouraging the organisation to return to the political fold.
The Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) said the authorities had failed to meet key provisions under the agreement.
In July, reformist Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed removed the OLF from a list of terror organisations, and two months later its exiled leadership made a triumphant return home.
The two sides also concluded a deal in August aimed at opening the way for the OLF to return to the political arena.
However, the accord has run into snags. The government has called for OLF fighters to immediately lay down their arms, and says some of them have been carrying out crimes.
The OLF denies this, and on Friday charged the government with failing to meet its promise of integrating its combatants into the armed forces.
"The OLF had agreed with the Ethiopian government on the formation of impartial security forces, inclusion of our fighters to security forces and the truth about our fighters and other Oromos who disappeared over the last 27 years," OLF chairman Dawud Ibsa said at a press conference in Addis Ababa.
"None of the points have been respected."
"Some of our fighters who have already entered into disarmament, demobilisation and rehabilitation camps have not been given the proper care, and we are prevented from seeing our fighters," he added.
The Oromos are the largest of Ethiopia's some 80 ethnic groups, with 35 percent of the nation's nearly 80 million inhabitants.
After the fall of Ethiopia's Marxist regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam in 1991, the OLF was part of the country's transitional government.
But after numerous disputes with the leadership it quit and demanded the creation of the independent state of Oromia.
In 1992, the OLF broke away from the ruling coalition, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), and then began an armed campaign against it.
The government's heavy response spurred unrest in Oromia, leading in 2015 to the biggest wave of protests in a quarter of a century and eventually to the resignation of Abiy's predecessor.
Ibsa has previously said that the OLF has around 2,000 fighters, in the south and east of the country.
On Friday, he said the OLF's forces "won´t attack, but they reserve the right for self-defence."
"The stationing of Ethiopian soldiers in our areas of operations has resulted in conflict between soldiers and with our fighters," he added.
Abiy, appointed in April, has won plaudits for a flurry of major reforms.
They include the release of thousands of imprisoned dissidents and journalists, forging a peace deal with rival Eritrea, and unveiling plans to privatise state corporations.
But his image has been dented by ethnic clashes in Addis Ababa and remote parts of the highly diverse country, sparking fears that Africa's second largest country could spiral once more into violence.

OLF Chairman, Dawud Ibsa said there is heavy fighting in Western Wellega

Tigrai Online, Dec. 21, 2018

OLF Chairman, Dawud Ibsa said there is heavy fighting in Western Wellega in a press conference he gave today.

Oromo Liberation Front - OLF Chairman, Mr. Dawud Ibsa said there is fighting between his rebel forces and government soldiers thought the state of Oromia, but the heavy fighting is going on in Western Wellega. Mr. Dawud Ibsa made the statement in a press conference he gave today.

Mr. Dawud Ibsa added there were many agreements reached between OLF and the Ethiopian government and the expectation of keeping the peace should not be only on OLF side. The Ethiopian government also should do its part to honor the agreements.

The leader of the OLF also said the fighting has created fear and distress on the population and the problem should not be seen only as OLF problem, it is Ethiopia’s problem.  OLF Chairman, Dawud Ibsa said his organization is ready for talks with the government to resolve the conflict if the Ethiopian government is ready to settle the disagreement peacefully.

Rally in Oromia region

Renewed Rallies in Oromia: Few Points

- This is not an upraising against the government but a call for paying attention and fulfilling the promises of reform.  It is not rejection of PM Abiy/ Pre Lemma's administration. Its a wake up nudge.
- Its not rejection of one party and endorsement of any other. In fact its warning to all leaders be it ruling or opposition. To the ruling party, speed up the transition, do not ignore the region and don't fail on your main obligation of protecting lives. To the opposition, don't be idle, unite, organize and build your capacity.
- Although the main issue is the killings in the Western provinces,  thats not all. The public feel they are neglected despite heavy sacrifice they paid over last years. They are frustrated people continue to be killed. They are disappointed the much hyped reform has not reached them at the bottom. Basically they are saying keep your promises and deliver them quickly.
- The rallies give much needed push to the transitional process.
- I think the message has been loud and clear to all stakeholders. I hope they will listen to the voices of the street and act quickly. Failing to do so will have dangerous consequences for the transition.
- This round of rallies displayed much more discipline and order. Proud and grateful.
