#Oromo#Protest#AbiyAhmedMustGo

The Oromo protests of 2015-2018 paved the way for Abiy Ahmed to become Ethiopia’s PM. Since becoming PM, Abiy betrayed not only the individuals who put him in charge but also the Oromo public who paid the ultimate sacrifice so that they will have a decent shot at a dignified life. Time and again, he demonstrated the contempt with which he holds the Oromo people while emboldening the neo-Neftegna ideology by re-inscribing its narratives and glorifying its symbolic personifications. Under his watch, the demonisation and vilification of the Oromo has reached a new height.
The Prime Minister’s latest move to detain Oromo opposition figures such as Jawar Mohammed, Bekele Gerba and others unleashed a second round of Oromo Protests - Oromoprotests 2.0, with widespread economic boycott and road closures across Oromia, the economic heartland of Ethiopia.
I don’t know what the PM has in mind but the path he has taken are likely to plunge the country into its depths. It is no longer possible to govern a diverse country like Ethiopia where there has been considerable levels of political awakening with force, intimidation, gaslighting and/or excessive policing.
Rounding up political opponents and locking them behind bars didn’t work in the past and it is impossible to see how and why it would this time. If anything, the prospect of governing Ethiopia through sheer violence is likely to rock the country into an endless and enteractable violence that would bring about the demise of the country as we know it. It didn’t work for Derg. It didn’t work for EPRDF, and it is delusional to think that it would somewhat work this time.
It is in the interest of the country and the various nations and nationalities that make up the federation to step back from the brink and find a way forward.

information coming from credible government sources indicates that #AbiyAhmed has lost control of everything.
According to the sources, #Abiy and his group hoped that the arrest of #JawarMohammed and high profile Oromo political leaders and the shutdown of #OMN would help control protests erupted following the assassination of #HachaluHundessa. Contrary to their expectation, the people intensified their protest by announcing the market and transportation boycott. Price hikes on goods is hurting people in big cities especially #AddisAbaba.
Another nightmare for Abiy is the news that many #Qeerroos are resorting to armed struggle. He already failed to control rebels that are challenging his government in the West and South Oromia region.

Speaker of Ethiopia's Upper House Resigns After Polls Postponed

ADDIS ABABA — Ethiopia's upper house speaker resigned on Monday in apparent protest at the postponement of planned elections in the Horn of Africa country over the coronavirus, a sign of growing tension between her party and the government.
The speaker Keria Ibrahim is also a top official in Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), one of the country's major political parties and which has opposed the poll postponement.
The parliamentary and regional elections had been planned for August ahead of the end of incumbent Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's term in September. No new date has yet been set.
In a televised speech, Keria accused Abiy's government of taking away Ethiopians' sovereign rights, without elaborating.

She was widely understood to refer to the government's decision to postpone the elections which effectively allowed Abiy to continue ruling beyond the expiry of his term.
"I can't be an accomplice when the constitution is being violated and a dictatorial government is being formed," she said. "I have resigned not to be collaborator (with) such a historical mistake."

Last month TPLF, which is also the governing party for the country's Tigray region, threatened to organise polls for the area in defiance of the postponement, potentially setting the region on a collision course with the federal government.
Get For You, a personalized daily digest with more stories like this.
Keria's resignation underscored the deteriorating relationship between Abiy and his ruling Prosperity Party and the TPLF, said Kjetil Tronvoll, professor of peace and conflict studies at Bjørknes University in Oslo.
"If the process is left unabated, it may lead to an open confrontation," he said.
Abiy took power in Africa’s second most populous country in 2018 and went on to roll out a series of reforms allowing greater freedoms in what had long been one of the continent's most repressive states.

He was hailed as Ethiopia's 'saviour' for bringing peace to the Horn of Africa, picking up the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
But Abiy Ahmed, the country's liberal prime minister and the continent's youngest leader, is at risk of losing his shine with a brutal crackdown on dissent.
Opposition and critics of the 43-year-old leader have been rounded up and imprisoned.

Rights groups are warning that the dream of a liberal Ethiopia is quickly evaporating.
For much of its history, Ethiopia has been ruled by dictatorial, centralised governments which have kept the landlocked East African nation one of the poorest on earth.
In 2018, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was appointed and introduced a series of spectacular liberalising reforms. The government freed thousands of political prisoners and urged exiled activists and journalists to return home.
Abiy talked about opening up the country’s economy and made plans for free and fair elections. Then in 2019, Abiy won the Nobel peace prize for ending two decades of conflict with Eritrea, which had left around 80,000 people dead.
However, despite rapid liberal reforms, Ethiopia’s government is struggling to contain a series of ethnic horrific clashes, which are destabilising large parts of the country.
Over the last few years, there have been alarming reports of abuses by state security forces in Ethiopia’s Oromia region. This has fuelled resentment towards Abiy’s administration among the Oromo, the country’s largest ethnic group.
Ethiopian security forces out of carrying out “horrendous human rights violations” in the region including burning homes to the ground, extrajudicial killings and raping civilians suspected of supporting the rebels, according to Amnesty International.

The singer’s murder was followed by weeks of protests, lawlessness and looting in the capital and across the Oromia region. Armed gangs roamed towns, brutally killing people with clubs and machetes and burning homes and businesses to the ground.
The army cracked down ruthlessly and the ensuing violence left 239 people dead, according to the government.“Soldiers shot my brother unprovoked,” said Gemechu*, who says he fled the army’s advance. “I couldn’t even stay in town to bury him.”
At least 7,000 people have been arrested, with many high profile critics of Abiy among those rounded up and put in prison.
Among those arrested were Jawar Mohammed and Bekele Gerba, both members of the opposition Oromo Federalist Congress party and arguably two of the most influential of dissident voices in the country.
“The prosecution is alleging that they were behind the unrest and also involved in a failed plot to assassinate government officials,” their lawyer Tuli Bayissa told The Telegraph.
Dejene Tafa, a member of the Oromo Liberation Front party, was taken from a prison cell to a hospital after displaying flu-like symptoms. “The facility he was being held at had a Covid-19 outbreak. We fear he may have contracted it,” said Tuli Bayissa.
Eskinder Nega, a press freedom advocate and politician, was also rounded up for allegedly stoking tensions. His lawyer said that Eskinder had suffered beatings in prison.
The arrests of prominent Oromo personalities, has put Abiy increasingly at odds with the Oromo, who initially formed the bulk of Abiy’s support base.
The arrests have prompted fears that the Nobel Peace Prize Winner may not be committed to the democratic reforms he has promised in the past.
“In a country with a very recent history of pumped-up charges against dissidents, the current administration needs to show that they are committed to ensuring credible justice and are tolerant of criticism by political opponents,” said Laetitia Bader from Human Rights Watch.

For its part, the government insists it is merely enforcing the law. “To engage in criminal activities and hide behind the curtain of being ‘government critics’ is not only an erroneous narrative but a threat to the duties of government in maintaining the rule of law,” said Billene Seyoum, Press Secretary at the Prime Minister’s office.

Jawar Mohammed, Bekele Gerba and other political prisoners currently on trial facing bogus charges are considering presenting their cases in Afaan Oromo in future court appearances, according to sources close to their defence team. For high profile political prisoners equally proficient in both languages to do this is a significant act of defiance against the Ethiopian state which has always used courtrooms as a weapon to unleash targeted violence against politically conscious Oromos (in most cases in a language that the defendants are completely unfamiliar with). In this instance their decision may not make a material difference in terms of influencing the outcome for we all know this is a political show trial with a predetermined verdict. However, at the very least it will expose to the world that Ethiopian federal courts still do not recognise the language of the country's largest ethnic group (45 million +) in their own capital, FINFINNE, other than through an interpreter.

When Abiy Ahmed was asked in a recent OBN interview why he didn't push for Afaan Oromo to become a federal working language, he said "officials from other regions have now started saying #akkam #galatoomaa in between their speeches when they come to our region and I have started posting updates in Afaan Oromo. This is a huge progress". Not only did he present this as a major breakthrough, he also asked the journalist to come back and ask him the same question in 20 years time if he wanted a more significant achievement. Such is the delusion the Prime Minister is in. Oromos will not wait 20 more years for him to deliver and most importantly he's living in a fool's paradise to think he'll still be in office 20 years from now. The Oromo political prisoners will come out bigger and victorious out of this politically motivated witch-hunt and, in the process, expose Abiy for what he is. A dangerously deluded wannabe king with an imperial mindset who came out of nowhere to hijack the people's quest for freedom, equality and justice. It may not seem like it at the minute, but it's a matter of time before Abiy is violently ousted and thrown where he belongs - in the dustbin of history.

#AbiyMustGo

The safety and well-being of the Oromo political prisoners including Mr.
Dawud Ibsa, chairman of the Oromo Liberation Front, are in a grave danger

Press Released by Global Oromo Advocacy Group (GOAG)

Intimidating, jailing, persecuting and killing of citizens, especially, Oromo politicians and selfconscious Oromo elites have been the culture for the successive Ethiopian leaders. Although true for most citizens of other nations and nationalities, the Oromo people are specifically targeted by the Ethiopian governments and its political system for decades. When Dr. Abiy Ahmed, the current Prime minister of Ethiopia, took over the premiership, most people genuinely hoped that the dictatorial system in Ethiopia will come to an end. The anticipation was high both nationally and internationally. In reality, what happened since then and currently happening is contrary to the anticipation. The Ethiopian government’s involvement in the assassination of artist Hacaalu Hundessa, prominent Oromo singer and song writer, is the most recent indicator of the abusive character of this dictatorial regime. Being thrown in jail without any wrong-doing or for just being a member or a supporter of any Oromo political party became the new normal in Ethiopia. The recent rounds of mass arrest and imprisonment of Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) leaders, members and supporters, perpetrated by the Ethiopian security forces, are evident of that. In fact, the extent of the crackdown on OLF leaders are very alarming.

As we recall, Hacaaluu Hundessa, a famous Oromo artist, was assassinated on June 29, 2020. Many believe that the government of Dr. Abiy Ahmed has been involved in the plot leading to his assassination. Instead of establishing an independent investigator, the government is rather busy arresting and intimidating the Oromo political party leaders and supporters, activists, journalists, and above all, the Oromo youths across Oromia, as if all involved in the assassination of Haccaluu Hundessa. Members and supporters of the OLF are specifically targeted in this event across the regions. Worse, the government security forces have killed more than 300 innocent Oromo citizens and incarcerated more than 15,000 people just for protesting peacefully against the killing of the artist. Such reckless measures taken by the government security forces on dissent further angered and intensified the protest and the continuation of the killings. This made many to believe that the government of Dr. Abiy Ahmed has a direct involvement or at least participated in the plot leading to the assassination of the artist to use it as a pretext to crackdown on political opponents.

As we prepare this press, the government security forces are carrying on massive arresting and killing innocent Oromos across Oromia. The OLF and OFC leaders, members and supporters are the main target of the government security forces and there is no way that all these detainees have been involved in the assassination of Hacaalu Hundessa. Perhaps the motivation is clearly political rather than being related to Hacaalu’s killing. The following are just few of the high profile OLF and OFC leaders and members jailed for no reasons;
1). Mrs. Chaltu Takele, head of the OLF branch office, Shambo
2). Dr. Shigut Geleta (PhD), advisor, OLF
3). Mr. Michael Boran, member of the central committee, OLF
4). Kol. Gemechu Ayana, advisor, OLF
5). Mr. Bekele Gerba, secretary, OFC
6). Mr. Jawar Mohammed, member, OFC
7). Mr. Lemi Begna, Member, OLF
8). Mr. Dakeba Wario (community elder)
9). Mr. Dejene Tafa, member, OFC
10). Mr. Sisay Dirriba, Lecturer, Haramaya University. Mr. Sisay is the brother of Mr. Marroo Dirriba, commander-in-chief of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), Western wing, and he has no affiliation with any political party. We believe that Mr. Sisay was detained solely for being the family member of Mr. Marro Dirriba.

Sadly, except few of the OFC members listed above and Chaltu Takele, as of now, none of the OLF leaders, members and supporters arrested have been brought to court, violating their constitutional rights to get fair trial. In addition, 103 OLF members serving the party in different capacity at the party’s headquarter (Gullallee, Finfinne) and various branch offices across the country are being arrested and the whereabout of these detainees are still unknown to the families and relatives. We also recall that Mr. Abdi Regassa (Member of the executive committee, OLF), Yaso Kebebe (Member, OLF) and Kayo Fufa (Member, OLF), were arrested about two months ago and since then are suffering in prison. Our sources indicate that the court found Mr. Abdi Regassa not guilty of any charges against him and the court declared him free. However, the Ethiopian government security and police forces failed to obey the court order and continued keeping him in prison. This is a prime example of the absence of the rule of law in Ethiopia, and this was not the first time. Neither Mr. Yaso Kebebe nor Mr. Kayo Fufa have gotten fair trial too. Therefore, GOAG is gravely concerned about the well-being of all these detainees and call on the Ethiopian government to either immediately release or arrange a fair trial for them. We would also like to alert the international community to pressure the Ethiopian government to uphold the implementation of its own constitution and international laws.

Continued cracking down on political opponents, since July 3, 2020, the government of Dr. Abiy Ahmed has put the OLF leader Mr. Dawud Ibsa and the OFC leader Prof. Merera Gudina under house arrest. And since July 24, 2020, the telephone line of Mr. Dawud Ibsa has been cut off and the security forces have been disallowed anyone from visiting him. The situation that Mr. Dawud Ibsa currently experiencing is extremely worrisome to anyone with decent human imagination. The GOAG is seriously concerned for the physical and mental health as well as the psychological well-being of Mr. Dawud Ibsa. We are also worried for his safety and security as he has no connection with the outside world, to his relatives and friends due to the telephone line cut off. If true, what is trending on social media is rather disturbing; the government of Dr. Abiy Ahmed is plotting to kill Mr. Dawud Ibsa. Forced with this urgency, the GOAG calls upon all international diplomats, human rights defenders, international communities and governments to put utmost pressure on Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s government to end this senseless house arrest and return the telephone line of Mr. Dawud Ibsa. It is imperative to rationalize if such politically motivated harassment of political opponents does exhibit any good to the country and peace process in any way.

Accordingly, the GOAG hereby call up on;
• The Oromo people to stand together, regardless of affiliation to any political party or ideology, and defend our common national interest from the Ethiopian government and its affiliates. GOAG strongly advises the Oromo public to focus on the major threat to our existence, which is the Ethiopian political system. Unless the political system of the country toward Oromo and other nations and nationalities is changed from its foundation, the suffering of our people will continue.
• The people of other nations and nationalities to stand with the Oromo people and fight against our common enemy, the injustice of the Ethiopian political system. Though, today, the crisis looks Oromo issues, tomorrow, it will certainly be yours too. Thus, you should stop looking the crisis from the sideline. It is worthwhile fighting today with the Oromo people for our common goods in the future, and thus, GOAG calls upon you to smartly act now with the Oromo public.
• The international community, human rights organizations, and governments to urgently act to stop the current political crisis in Ethiopia. GOAG believes that unless acted upon in timely manner, the situation will get worse and that will result in a significant human catastrophe in Ethiopia, and it is not hard to predict the extent of this crisis in the Horn of Africa.

Therefore, GOAG would like to alarm the international community to responsibly act before the situation gets out of control resulting in more tragic human disaster in the region and beyond.

Oromo: Chairman Dawud Ibsa under House Arrest

Members of the OLF in the Diaspora have denounced the house arrest of the organisation's Chairman, Mr Dawud Ibsa. Local sources have reported that Mr Ibsa's property is under siege by Ethiopian security forces, while his telephone line has been completely disconnected. Moreover, government security vehicles have been seen driving in and out of the compound of OLF headquarter in the Gullalle sub-district of Addis Ababa.

In the aftermath of the assassination of Oromo's beloved artist Hacaaluu Hundessaa, members of Ethiopia’s armed forces deployed throughout Oromia have crackdown on anyone accused of being a member or supporter of the OLF. Currently, senior leaders of the organisation are detained without due process, including UNPO Presidency Member Dr Shigut Geleta.
