PM Abiy Ahmed spoke about peace, love & reconciliation for the most part of his first year in office. He even created a Ministry of Peace and received unprecedented support at home & abroad. He won the Nobel Prize for Peace. However, is actions & words this past week, threatening war with his fellow citizens, fall far short of a standard expected of a Nobel Laureate.
Abiy's administration should step back from the brink. It must return to the transitional process and work towards RECONCILIATION and a new POLITICAL SETTLEMENT for the country. This means a an all-inclusive national dialogue that leads to an agreed road map. Difficult work but the only plausible path forward to give Ethiopia a chance.
The loss of lives that followed Haacaaluu's assassination is tragic and heart-breaking, and there should be real accountability and justice for Haacaaluu and all those killed in the violence. But the government could not achieve the dual goals of accountability and reconciliation while arresting its opponents and critical voices.
It must release all political opponents and critical voices and return to dialogue with the view to securing a long term political/constitutional settlement.
