OMN: Swedish MP, Honourable Thomas Hammarberg was chairman of Amnesty International's Swedish section from 1971-74 and on behalf of Amnesty International received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977. After several international assignments, he became Secretary General of Amnesty International in 1980–1986.
In the years 1986–1992, Hammarberg was Secretary General of Save the Children in Sweden. He was Swedish Ambassador for Human Rights 1994–2002 and served in 1996–2000 as UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative (SRSG) for Human Rights in Cambodia and UN Adviser on Human Rights in Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus 2001– 2003. Hammarberg was Secretary General of the Olof Palme International Center (2002–2005). Between 1 April 2006 and 31 March 2012, he was the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights.
Hammarberg has also been involved in the multilateral peace process in the Middle East, including through The Refugee Working Group.
Hammarberg has written a large number of books and articles on human rights, especially on issues concerning children, refugees, minorities, xenophobia and Roma, the death penalty and torture, and on human rights.
He also follows up on the political situation in Ethiopia in general and the Oromo cause in particular. Honorable Mr. Thomas Hammarberg will shortly be our guest on OMN.
